When Cummins transitioned from traditional mechanical solid lifters to hydraulic flat-tappet and roller lifters in late-model 6.7L engines, the change reduced the need for periodic valve-lash adjustments and helped lower noise, vibration, and harshness. However, hydraulic valvetrain components operating in a high-pressure diesel environment can experience serious durability problems.
The valvetrain operates under extreme stress. High cylinder pressure and stiff valve springs place continuous loads on the hydraulic lifters. Because the lifters rely on clean engine oil to maintain hydraulic pressure, soot accumulation, thermal breakdown, and delayed oil changes can restrict internal oil passages.
How lifter damage progresses
Wear on a lifter roller wheel or pin can cause the roller to skid across the camshaft lobe instead of rolling smoothly. Once that friction begins, the camshaft can score rapidly and send fine metal debris through the oiling system.

A customer recently brought in a truck after noticing a ticking noise under the hood. Our technicians removed the valve cover and inspected the rocker arms and pushrods for unusual wear. When this pattern confirms hydraulic lifter and camshaft damage, a properly planned repair or conversion may be recommended to restore reliability.
